Dayton, Ohio-Steven J. Berberich, Ph.D., has been appointed to serve as interim chair for the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at Wright State University, effective January 1, 2008, for a period of three years.
Berberich is director of the Center for Genomics Research and professor of biochemistry and molecular biology with joint appointments in the Boonshoft School of Medicine and the College of Science and Mathematics. He holds a B.S. in biology and a Ph.D. in biomedical science from Wright State University and completed a post-doctoral fellowship in molecular biology at Princeton University.
Berberich is the recipient of both teaching and professional awards, and his external research grants have totaled more than $6.5 million. He has also served as a contributor and reviewer for many scientific journals and reviewed grant proposals for the National Institutes of Health and National Science Foundation. He is an active member of the American Association for Cancer Research and is currently funded by the National Cancer Institute for his work on the p53 tumor suppressor protein.
The Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology consists of 13 faculty, 8 administrative and technical staff members, and over 35 students at the bachelors, masters, and doctoral levels.
