Marjorie Bowman, M.D., M.P.A., dean of the Boonshoft School of Medicine at Wright State University, was the keynote speaker at the 2013 Master of Public Health Program Graduation at the University of Pennsylvania on May 13.
Bowman is the former chair of the Department of Family Medicine and Community Health in the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, and past director of the university’s Center for Public Health Initiatives. She also presented an award named in her honor, the Marjorie A. Bowman Award for Undergraduate Public Health Service, to the 2013 recipient, graduating student Samuel Ware.
The award was created in recognition of Bowman’s work at Penn, exemplified by an unwavering commitment to advancing knowledge and service in preventive medicine, public health and community-based initiatives to address social determinants of health. During her tenure at Penn, Bowman inspired learners and colleagues to forge academic-community partnerships and to pursue innovative strategies to address public health needs.
The university also established the Marjorie A. Bowman New Investigator Research Award in 2006, to annually recognize a junior faculty member for research that has shed light on a fundamental clinical problem or enhanced health care organization and delivery.
