Lakia Q. Gray named Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine director of recruitment and student development

The Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine announced that Lakia Q. Gray has been named director of recruitment and student development. 

She began her duties on June 17. Gray, who held positions with Girl Scouts of Western Ohio and the Democratic National Committee, is the director of the medical school’s Horizons in Medicine program. The program offers high school students from disadvantaged or minority backgrounds the opportunity to see firsthand the science and delivery of health care that forms the foundation of a career in medicine. 

Gray also is the director of the medical school’s Prematriculation Program, a four-week summer program for incoming medical students. The program offers students exposure to material seen early in the first year, including courses in human structure, critical thinking and testing strategies.  

In addition, Gray is responsible for recruiting students for the medical school and the Horizons in Medicine program. She will work with Kevin Watt, M.D., assistant dean of diversity and inclusion, on increasing the number of underrepresented minorities who matriculate into medical school. 

“I am excited to have Lakia as a part of our team in student affairs and admissions,” Watt said. “Her pleasant demeanor and concern for excellence will help us to achieve our goals of providing quality medical education.”

She also is on the medical school’s admissions committee. She will review medical school applications and participate in interviews.

“I’m looking forward to developing relationships with the medical school students and creating a quality experience for the students who participate in the Horizons in Medicine program and the Prematriculation Program,” said Gray, who is from Dayton and earned her bachelor’s degree from Howard University and her master’s in public administration from Wright State University. “I also am looking forward to recruiting and supporting a diverse group of students.”
