Consumer Advocacy Model (CAM)

CAM, the Consumer Advocacy Model, is a unique program offered by Wright State University. This program assists people who are experiencing alcohol, drug or mental health problems, especially persons with disabilities. We are committed to improving the lives of persons with substance abuse and mental health issues, with particular sensitivity to physical or cognitive limitations that may serve as barriers to recovery. We accomplish this by incorporating research into a treatment and rehabilitation philosophy that values consumer participation and choice in all aspects of our activities.

CAM utilizes a consumer-centered, interdisciplinary team treatment approach to provide a wide-range of services to its consumers:

  • Comprehensive assessment
  • Psychiatric evaluation
  • Individual counseling
  • Group counseling
  • Family counseling
  • Case management
  • Community psychiatric support
  • Medication/Somatic services
  • Urinalysis screening
  • Crisis intervention
  • Parenting Education/Support groups

Services are enhanced through:

  • Advocacy and support
  • Referral and linkage
  • Integrated services coordination
  • Community resource identification and referral
  • Individualized treatment planning
  • Education and peer support groups
  • Consultaion/In-Services Workshops

CAM is a clinical component of the Center for Intervention, Treatment, and Addictions Research (CITAR) and the Substance Abuse Resources and Disabilities Issues (SARDI) Program at Boonshoft School of Medicine.

SARDI seeks to improve the quality of life for persons with disabilities, including those who are concurrently affected by substance abuse. Dedicated to the idea that multiple solutions and interdisciplinary methods are necessary to have effective change, SARDI uses many angles to approach the combined topic of substance abuse and disability. The SARDI Program achieves its objective by conducting collaborative and participatory research; developing intervention approaches; and training; and disseminating related information.
