Training Certificates and Medical Licenses
Revised October 2001
Ohio training certificates are mandatory for all residents and fellows. Application materials are online. A training certificate is valid for one year but may be renewed annually at the discretion of the Board for a maximum of five years. The resident shall limit activities under the certificate to the programs of the hospitals or facilities for which the training certificate is issued. The holder shall train only under the supervision of the physicians responsible for supervision as part of the residency or clinical fellowship program. [ORD 4731.291 (A,C,D)]
Residents providing patient care in accredited training programs under appropriate supervision are not required to have a license to practice medicine. However, any patient care provided outside of that prescribed as a part of an accredited training program (such as "moonlighting") is not covered under the training certificate. Physicians who practice medicine outside of the auspices of their official training program must have a valid license to practice medicine in the state where the practice occurs. Residents are encouraged to obtain a permanent medical license at the earliest possible time.
