Chief Residents
Marc Gutierrez, M.D.
F. Edward Hébert School of Medicine, Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences
Hey there! My name is Marc and I'm one of the Chief Residents at Wright-Patterson AFB. I grew up in Burlington, NC, where I learned to love the outdoors and UNC Tar Heels basketball. I'm a lifelong singer, and I have been in 3 a cappella groups since high school. My other hobbies include playing guitar, biking, and playing a supportive role in our outstanding IM trivia team. I graduated from Uniformed Services University aka "America's Medical School," which is the only military medical school in the country. I got to travel all over the US and abroad, completing my clinical rotations at military hospitals all over the world. My favorite experience was spending three months in Hawaii in early 2018. I think I'm one of the few medical students who learned how to surf during their general surgery rotation!
I decided I wanted to go into internal medicine because I love taking care of sick people in the hospital. My dream is to be a pulmonary/critical care doctor for the Air Force, taking care of our sickest service members and their families. I chose Wright State because I felt it provided the highest-acuity ICU training in the entire Air Force GME. Though the training has been as rigorous as I expected, I also lucked-out in that my intern class was incredibly supportive. There are only team players in this program, and, even in the midst of a global pandemic, we've made efforts to keep the social network of our class strong. Finally, our faculty is full of leaders, teachers, and mentors who remind me daily that practicing medicine is about more than just diagnosis and treatment.
Amie Kim, M.D.
Western Michigan University School of Medicine
Hi everyone! My name is Amie Kim, and I am one of the chief residents this academic year. The short answer for where I’m from is the northwest suburbs of Chicago. The longer answer is my family moved around a lot growing up—so we’ve lived in Toronto, Seoul, North New Jersey, and Italy. Unsurprisingly, I developed a love for traveling and being able to experience new places, people, and cultures. This was something that I really missed during the pandemic, and I hope I can travel and treasure those moments more in the future. I am also a big dog/cat person—although I’m allergic to both. I ended up adopting my cat Olive during my intern year and having her definitely outweighs the hassle of having to take daily allergy meds.
Professionally, I am interested in Pulmonary and Critical Care medicine and plan to apply for fellowship this upcoming cycle. Starting residency in July 2020 in the medical ICU in the middle of the pandemic was terrifying/overwhelming at times, but it also pushed me to learn medicine and practice my procedural skills in a velocity that I didn’t think was possible. Thankfully, the camaraderie that I noticed between the residents during my interview with the program held true throughout residency, and having my co-resident friends was crucial in getting through the harder times in residency. Outside of medicine and traveling, I like photography and reading—which are both hobbies I’d like to invest more time in this upcoming year.
Timothy Lo, D.O.
Des Moines University College of Osteopathic Medicine
Hi everyone! My name is Tim Lo. I am the Chief Resident in charge of the Internal Medicine residents at Miami Valley Hospital. I was born and raised in Pasadena, CA. I attended the University of California, Riverside, for undergrad and went on to Des Moines University for Medical School. My favorite part of the WSU residency program is the co-resident camaraderie and the patient diversity/pathology.
Dayton is a great area for multiple reasons, including the extensive bike trails and Dorothy Lane Market, where you can frequently catch me shopping for either sabauce chicken for dinner or ANY of their baked goods for dessert. In my free time, I enjoy spending time with Dobby, (after Dobby the elf from Harry Potter) my dachshund mix. I also enjoy entertainment that includes anything with wheels!

Elizabeth Willis, M.D.
University of Kentucky College of Medicine
Hi! My name is Libby and I'm a Chief Resident at Wright-Patterson AFB. I'm originally from Scottsdale, AZ, and completed undergrad at the University of Arizona in Physiology. In keeping with the Wildcat tradition, I went to medical school at the University of Kentucky ...where I was banned from attending basketball games by my Uncle, a die-hard fan, because the only two I attended, they lost. My Mom's originally from Dayton, so coming to WSU felt like a full circle moment for me. Outside of work, I love dinners out with friends downtown, reading a good book on my beloved couch, catching up on some much-needed retail therapy, or going for a run/bike ride along the hundreds of miles of trails that the Dayton area offers. Truly the only thing missing from my life is a dog, but I attempt to fill the void by hanging out with my co-residents and their dogs.
WSU is a unique program in that we get civilian, military, and VA training; I truly believe it is a place that produces competent, compassionate physicians. It was important to me to pick a place that valued hard work, but also respected the fact that residents can enjoy a life outside of the hospital every now and then. I think this program does a stellar job of both, and I feel lucky to be here.
Nicholas Zingas, M.D.
Vanderbilt University School of Medicine
Hi everyone! My name is Nick Zingas. I am the Chief Resident in charge of the civilian resident Clinic. I was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan. I grew up in a big Greek family as the oldest of 22 grandchildren. I attended the University of Michigan for undergrad and went on to Vanderbilt University for medical school. I chose WSU for a combination of the training, the people, and the location. In my free time I enjoy playing and watching sports, hanging out with my family, exploring new food options and traveling to new places.
