Residency Program

Welcome

Welcome to the home page for our Neurology Residency Program. We believe our planning, commitment and enthusiasm will translate into an excellent neurology residency experience. The goal of the Neurology Residency Program at Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine is the production of future leaders in neurology patient care, research and education. We seek to graduate neurologists who are prepared to meet the challenges presented by the rapidly expanding body of knowledge in the neurosciences. We have carefully designed a program that builds the basic strengths necessary to become an outstanding clinical neurologist and, for those interested in research, to develop into a first-rate physician-scientist.

Program Description

The Neurology Residency Program's mission is to establish a foundation for lifelong learning in neurology and in the neurosciences. To accomplish this mission, we offer trainees a flexible didactic program tailored to their individual needs and extensive practical training, as well as one-on-one mentoring from faculty.

Neurology Residency at Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine

Throughout the program, residents assume primary responsibility for the evaluation and treatment of neurology inpatients and outpatients under the supervision of faculty. Residents evaluate and manage patients at Miami Valley Hospital, the Neurology Clinic located at Miami Valley Hospital, Dayton Veterans Affairs Medical Center and Dayton Children’s Hospital. Residents obtain general neurology experience and rotate in subspecialty clinics where they work closely with subspecialty faculty. The resident continuity clinic provides residents the opportunity to evaluate their own new neurology patients, follow up on hospital patients and follow the longitudinal progress of their patients under the supervision and guidance of the neurology faculty.

The Wright State University Department of Internal Medicine and Neurology is closely aligned with other programs including neurosurgery, physical medicine, and rehabilitation and psychiatry. Areas of specialization in the neuroscience program include behavioral neurology, cerebrovascular disease, child neurology, clinical neurophysiology, critical care, epilepsy, movement disorders, neuroimaging, neuroimmunology, neuromuscular disease, neuro-oncology, neuro-ophthalmology, pain management, psychiatry, and sleep disorders.

Additionally, the Department of Internal Medicine and Neurology is a fundamental part of the Neuroscience Institute, a joint venture between Premier Health and Wright State University. The Neuroscience Institute has talented, NIH-funded neuroscientists on the Wright State University campus, including a team-awarded two prestigious Program Project Grants totaling more than $9 million from the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, some of whom are included on the faculty of the Neurology Residency Program. Faculty from the Neuroscience Institute will assist in providing basic neuroscience education to our residents and provide research opportunities for the residents.
