DAYTON, OHIO- Barbara L. Schuster, M.D., professor and chair of the Department of Internal Medicine at Wright State University School of Medicine, was honored by her peers at theImage of Barbara Schuster, M.D. Association of Program Directors in Internal Medicine's (APDIM) annual meeting held in New Orleans. She received the prestigious Dema C. Daley Founder's award, given annually to a member of the internal medicine community recognized nationally as an educator, innovator, and leader. Recipients of the award have influenced undergraduate or graduate medical education, the development of training programs in internal medicine, APDIM, or other organizations that are educationally focused.
A former APDIM President, Dr. Schuster chairs the Council of Academic Societies of the Association of American Medical Colleges and is a Member of the Association of Professors of Medicine Board of Directors. She was recognized by the American College of Physicians, the largest medical specialty organization, with election to Mastership in 1996, an honor awarded a small number of physicians who have contributed extensively to the profession. She was subsequently elected a Regent of the American College of Physicians and Chairs the Education Committee. She currently chairs the Alliance for Academic Internal Medicine's Task Force on Financing Medical Education and participates in the Society of General Internal Medicine.
Schuster has been at the Wright State School of Medicine since 1995. Prior to her present position, Dr. Schuster served as residency program director for the Primary Care Program in Internal Medicine and the Combined Internal Medicine and Pediatric Program at the University of Rochester School of Medicine & Dentistry. She holds a B.A. in Biology and an M.S. in Education from the University of Pennsylvania, and an M.D. from the University of Rochester School of Medicine & Dentistry, where she also completed postgraduate residency training in internal medicine.
