Kristen P. Massimino receives the 2007 Dean's Award

DAYTON, OHIO-Howard M. Part, M.D., dean for Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine, presented the Dean's Award to Kristen P. Massimino during the Class of 2007's graduation ceremony held at the Schuster Performing Arts Center on Friday, May 25.

The Dean's Award is given annually to a graduate who demonstrates a commitment to academic excellence, embodies empathy and compassion toward others, exemplifies personal integrity and professionalism, and has earned the respect and trust of classmates and faculty.

Originally from Vandergrift, Pennsylvania, Massimino holds an M.S. in epidemiology from George Washington University in Washington, D.C., and a B.A. in biology from Cornell University, New York. Prior to medical school, she completed a fellowship in epidemiology at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, Georgia, and worked as a bio-terrorism epidemiologist for the State of Ohio.

While in medical school, Massimino received the Academy of Medicine Outstanding First Year Student Award, the Human Structure Award, and the McGraw-Hill/Appleton and Lange Award during her first year; the David Place, M.D. Memorial Scholarship and the James B. Peoples Surgery Silver Scalpel Award in her third year; and the Ranville Scholarship in her fourth year. She served on the Student Promotions Committee, is a member of the American Medical Women's Association serving as president during her second year, and a member of the American College of Surgeons Medical Student division. She is a member and past president of Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society, and a member of the Gold Humanism Honor Society. She also participated as a volunteer for Reach Out Montgomery County and worked as a student liaison to assist in both promoting and coordinating student volunteer activities for the program.

Massimino will be going to Portland, Oregon, to begin a residency in general surgery at the Oregon Health & Science University.
