October 12 conference examines needs of Grandparents Raising Grandchildren

“Meeting the Needs of Ohio's Kinship Caregivers,” a free conference for health and human service providers, kinship-care advocates and caregivers, will be held Tuesday, Oct. 12, at the Galbreath Pavillion, Lower Level Room 1, 55 East State Street, in Columbus. The conference runs from 12:30-6:30 p.m.

Grandparents and other kinship caregivers are raising more than 4 million children across the nation. In Ohio the number is estimated to be more than 167,000, according to a task force report given to the Ohio General Assembly in June. Conference participants will have an opportunity to learn more about a new statewide initiative that will improve support services for grandparents raising grandchildren. The conference is intended for legislators and staff, social service providers, kinship-care advocates and caregivers.

Marianne Takas, J.D., will be the featured speaker. She is a child welfare policy consultant and author of Relatives Raising Children. She will discuss "Model State Practices" that enhance support systems for kinship caregivers.

There is no charge for the conference, but pre-registration is required by Tuesday, October 5. To register, or for more information, contact Kelly Wood at (937) 775-1125.
