Resident applicants to our program invariably ask us to describe our department. An academic department is characterized by its faculty, students, programs, theoretical orientation and values. The interests and accomplishments of the faculty can be, at least in part, assessed through our CV’s linked to this web site. These documents, however, are less adequate in conveying the prevailing values of our department. These include a commitment to the following:

These values are evident in the types and excellence of our programs in public sector psychiatry, education, research, and clinical services. Our widely recognized community psychiatry programs include, but are not limited to, a city-wide emergency psychiatry service, a state hospital staffed by our faculty and residents, comprehensive child and adolescent psychiatry services, a rural psychiatry presence, provision of mental health services to the homeless, care for the indigent within the Dayton community hospitals, and a unique program in the assessment and treatment of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The quality of undergraduate and graduate medical education programs in the department has been acknowledged regionally and nationally. In addition to prominent research efforts in neuroimaging, schizophrenia, eating and personality disorders, to name but a few, the residency training program offers in-depth opportunities in learning about providing psychotherapy, an important psychosocial component in caring for all of our patients.

Our mission is to teach and study mental health, mental illness, and treatment. We accomplish that mission through:
- Preparing residents to be psychiatrists informed by knowledge, sensitivity, skill, and skepticism;
- Performing clinically based research into normal and abnormal mental functioning and treatment of mental disorders;
- Teaching medical students about human development, mental illness, and the psychiatric aspects of illness and health;
- Attracting graduate medical residents who share our vision of scholarship, practice, and service
- Fostering academic affiliations with other providers and community organizations; and
- Promoting interdisciplinary and interfacility collaboration.
