Clinical Medicine

SMD 8130

Module Directors: Amanda Bell, M.D., Family Medicine; and Gregory Toussaint, M.D., Pediatrics

Module Description: The longitudinal Clinical Medicine Foundations module is the intersection of clinical skills and patient care. This module is comprised of 4 dimensions – Upstream Medicine, Clinical Skills, Professional Skills, and Interprofessional Engagement (IPE).

Upstream Medicine — This introduces students to the population-level social determinates of health, health disparities, health economics and insurance, prevention and health promotion, and the value of community resources for health improvement.

Clinical Skills — This module enables students to apply their increasing knowledge to the interview and physical exam of the patient. With early use of simulated patients and engaged learner techniques with peers and preceptors, students gain experience in the basics of clinical medicine. Throughout the first twenty months, students periodically interact with a wide variety of volunteer and standardized patients in increasingly more complex, real world scenarios cumulating in objective structured clinical examinations as preparation for Doctoring Phase clerkship rotations.

Professional Skills — This series of sessions primarily focuses on professional identity formation for medical students, including development of the skills and attributes of professionalism. Emphasis is given to what it means to be a physician, including the writing of a physician mission statement. Sessions will also address communication skills, personal well-being and resilience, cultural proficiency, leadership, and several behavioral medicine topics.
