Resident Life

On this page:

Hobbies

We have a diverse group of residents with a variety of interests and hobbies. Whether you enjoy trivia night, board games, joining a sports team (Wright State Intramurals), online gaming, or having a nice grill-out with friends, there are current residents who would love to join. We consider Wright State to be a “small big program” in that we have all the resources of a large university, yet everyone is individually known and a part of our residency family.

Living in Dayton

Housing is very affordable, and residents have both rented apartments and bought homes. Dayton also has an abundance of dog parks for your canine roommates. The majority of residents and their families live in downtown Dayton or in the suburbs of Beavercreek and Kettering. General rule of thumb is everything is about 15 minutes away with minimal traffic.

Local Attractions

Within the city of Dayton, there are many venues for recreational activities. For theatre goers there is the Schuster Performing Arts Center. Dayton is home to the Dayton Dragons, a minor league baseball team with a stadium downtown. If you desire a pint of beer, then visit one of the many local breweries! There are multiple parks and sites for hiking, biking, and kayaking. Dayton is also at the center of the largest paved trail network in America, including nearly 300 miles of interconnected bikeways between Cincinnati, Dayton, and Xenia.

Committees

Wellness Committee

Chief advisor: Dr. Alicia Latta

Run primarily by residents for residents, the committee's focus is to improve resident experiences in our program. The committee organizes quarterly recreational, social, and service events throughout the year. They are in charge of outfitting the resident work rooms with decorations for the holidays and ensuring that all work places have the tools needed to be a success.

Resident Advisory Committee

Faculty Advisor: Dr. Elizabeth Willis

4 PGY2 and 4 PGY3 residents, chosen as leaders in their individual cohorts, sit on the Resident Advisory Committee (RAC). The RAC is an integral part to the Program Evaluation Committee, which is a group of program leadership, core faculty, and chiefs that meet monthly to discuss the strengths and weaknesses of the program with the goal being intentional, thoughtful change. The residents, as part of RAC, have the duty of being the voice for all program residents and a 'seat at the table' when it comes to how this program assesses, innovates, and progresses.

Program Relations Committee

Faculty Advisor: Dr. Jason Corless

Residents with an eye and interest for social media and web design are encouraged to join this committee, which is in charge of our program Instagram, Facebook page, and Wright State website.

Recruitment Committee

Faculty Advisor: Dr. Eric Karr

With two senior resident chairs, the recruitment committee is in charge of organizing and hosting activities for rotating sub-I students. Additionally, they help with residency interviews, second look activities, and acting as a liaison for any medical students that may have questions about the program.

Resident Retreats

During the final months each year, each class has a retreat for recreation and team building.

  • R1s are guided through their transition to being senior residents
  • R2s build upon their teaching and leadership skills
  • R3s participate in guided reflection on their residency experience, provide feedback to the program, and celebrate with their cohort on a job well done
