Message From the Chair

As Interim Chair of the Department of Internal Medicine, I am excited to tell you about our amazing department! There are many exciting developments occurring including welcoming new leaders within our training program, moving into our brand new administrative/educational offices located conveniently at the main teaching hospital, Miami Valley Hospital (MVH) GME space, and another excellent resident match in 2025.  We are not just part of a large academic teaching hospital though,  Internal Medicine is closely affiliated with Wright-Patterson Medical Center, the Dayton Veterans Affairs Medical Center, and Dayton Children's Hospital.

In 2025, we have successfully transitioned to a fully affiliated academic hospital system. The IM department will now benefit from combining our academic strengths with Premier Health to assure best medical practices and teaching opportunities. This collaboration will yield greater resources and financial support for our teaching and research missions.  Throughout the recent transition, we have continued to excel at our three key missions: teaching, patient care, and scholarship.

The scholarly productivity of the department has continued to grow, with hundreds of resident presentations and publications each year. Several members of the department published papers in peer-reviewed journals in 2024-2025 and are excited to work with our learners and residents. Regional and national recognition of the faculty grew with presentations at major national meetings. Each year, residents submit their work at chapter meetings of the American College of Physicians and other specialty societies, with several residents earning awards, including the top research award at the national American College of Physicians in past meetings.

Internal Medicine sponsors a categorical internal medicine program and fellowships in gastroenterology, hematology and oncology, Geriatric medicine, and infectious diseases. The department also works closely with the Clinical Neurosciences, Family Medicine, Hospitalists, and Hospice and Palliative Care Fellowship programs. Internal Medicine has divisions in Cardiology, Endocrinology, Gastroenterology, General Internal Medicine, Hematology and Oncology, Infectious Diseases, Nephrology, Nuclear Medicine, Pulmonary and Critical Care, and Rheumatology.

We believe our success can be your success! If you have a passion for teaching and academics, we would welcome you to explore our department. Dayton is a wonderful place to practice, live, and raise a family. We are the best of the Midwest and enjoy a wonderful patient population, friendly coworkers, and terrific season full of outdoor activity. Our goal is to be at the forefront amongst our academic partners in Ohio and nationally. I invite you to learn more about the department and training program in our website.

Sincerely,

Bryan Ludwig, M.D. (he/him/his)
