Why did you choose Wright State? Besides the strong child psychiatry curriculum, focus on psychotherapy, and the beautiful seasonal changes of the Midwest, what set the psychiatry program at Wright State University apart for me were the supportive attendings, who enjoy spending time with residents, fielding both questions in clinic, and softballs at the resident-attending softball game! The program is family-friendly with various social outings, including golf tourneys, and a trip to Kings Island, and this year as well we have grand rounds with the esteemed Dr. Glen Gabbard. It has been easy to make WSU my home.

Graduate School: Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences
Professional Interests: Addiction medicine
Why did you choose Wright State? I enjoyed the atmosphere at WSU Psychiatry from the onset during my sub-internship; the residents were kind and encouraging. The faculty were passionate about teaching psychiatry and very personable. Some faculty don't even make a salary from teaching but do so out of love for the program and a desire to give to the next generation of psychiatrists. And my first experience in a psychotherapy case-conference.... just sealed the deal. I loved every moment of it. The opportunity to spend an hour every week to delve deep into psychodynamics is priceless. Like a glove.

Professional Interests: Addiction psychiatry
Why did you choose Wright State? This was the first program I interviewed at and as I went to my other interviews, I found myself constantly comparing them to WSU. This program has a plethora of extraordinary faculty, educational tracks with early exposure to substance abuse, and several different clinical sites. I also fell in love with Dayton from the aerial view from the airplane upon arriving for my interview. So much greenery to explore with my little family! Ultimately though, it came down to the people. It was clear from speaking with residents that this program fosters a very family friendly, collegial and supportive learning environment.

Why did you choose Wright State? I hold the faculty and support staff in high regard; quality of instruction and ease of logistics are on par with the best I have encountered. The demographics of patients in this area is diverse and similar to those that I will encounter while I serve in the USAF.

Why did you choose Wright State? Wright State University-Wright Patterson Medical Center Psychiatry Residency values quality patient care. In addition to medication management, there is an emphasis on psychotherapy. This program offers many different educational tracks, allowing one to explore their interests while in residency. They offer research, ECT, administrative experience, community psychiatry, and many other options.

Graduate School: M.B.A., East Carolina University
Undergraduate School: East Carolina Univeristy
Professional Interests: Psychosis, addiction, geriatrics, health care administration
Why did you choose Wright State? I spent a month at Wright State as a visiting student on an away rotation. Of all the places I visited, Dayton felt the most like home. Each attending I worked with emphasized learning over clinical service. Psychotherapy was another draw; there is a strong emphasis, and it starts during the very first year. I am very happy at Wright State and would gladly make the same decision again.

Peter Silverman

Peter Silverman
Medical School: USF Health Morsani College of Medicine
Undergraduate School: University of South Florida
Professional Interests: Understanding and utilizing neurostimulation and novel modalities to address psychiatric diseases; PTSD; psychotherapy; management/administration of mental health care systems
Why did you choose Wright State? So many reasons! From a residency standpoint, this program offers some great educators and a dedicated administration that values our progression against overworking residents. I particularly liked the fact that psychotherapy and humanism of our profession is strongly emphasized throughout the four years and residents start picking up psychotherapy patients during R-2. There is, of course, a strong foundation in psychopharmacology but understanding all the tools at our disposable is what I would imagine separates good and great psychiatrists. The newly created tracks to help residents hone their interests is another aspect of the program that is unique. As an AF candidate, the strong influence of civilian and military psychiatry will make me well-rounded and better able to interact with my civilian peers once I leave residency. The various sites offer such a strong variety of patient populations. Oh and of course, everyone here is very welcoming, friendly, and fun!
From a location standpoint, I have enjoyed this area far more than I ever thought I would! Much larger than I anticipated as someone coming from Tampa. I was looking to change locations and get some seasons (I have lived in Florida for 16 years) and Dayton offers that and more. To list a few things here: weekly farmer's markets, very minimal traffic (hallelujah!), very affordable living, miles and miles of hiking/bike trails, nearby to Cincinnati and Columbus (two great cities in my opinion), plenty of events in the area, the famously followed AAA Dayton Dragons baseball team, and unique downtown.
If you made it this far, you might as well apply to our program and come visit.

Why did you choose Wright State? I chose Wright State Psychiatry based primarily on the culture. I spent some time here during my fourth year of medical school and never once felt out of place; it just sort of felt like I was home. Of course there are other benefits that I enjoy such as the extensive therapy training, a diverse patient population, and having a large class to split call with and to count on when needed.
