Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion are a part of our education mission in the Department of Surgery and we are committed to it. We have a diverse group of residents and faculty in our program that enriches the educational experiences and learning environment, and fulfill our vision and mission.
Mission of DEI Steering Committee
Develop the environment of belonging and sustainable initiatives to promote and respect diverse background, culture, identities, and preferences. We aim to use our diverse workforce to drive excellence in clinical care, surgical education, research and scholarship.
Goals and Priorities
Assess the Program Needs
Develop data collection tools and/or use available data to take a deeper look at diversity (e.g., race, gender, sexual orientation, nationality, religious beliefs, etc.) and assess the learning environment and needs of the program.
Increase Shared Accountability and Promote Environment of Belonging and Inclusivity
Develop a safe environment and platform for reporting of any micro/macro-aggressions and/or discrimination within the department. Use these data and experiences for continuous enhancement of shared accountability and promotion of a culture of inclusion.
Enhance Collaboration and Representation of Minority Groups
Collaborate with program directors and leadership to increase and sustain diversity of the residency program and the department. Use this platform to also create modes of mentorship to aspiring medical students and current residents to build a pipeline of potential trainees and surgeon attendings.
