Continuing Medical Education

Evaluation Guidelines

Continuing medical education (CME) planning committees and departments must evaluate the effectiveness of each activity and use data from those evaluations to plan future activities. The information gathered should question whether or not attendees felt that the objectives were met.

Evaluations must:

  1. Question to what extent educational activities meet the CME mission
  2. Assess:
    1. Objectives
    2. Content
    3. Professional knowledge, skill, or attitude improvement
  3. Demonstrate that evaluation data are used in planning future CME activities
  4. Question presence of commercial bias
  5. Question if attendee would attend a similar conference next year

Explanation and Rationale

The systematic gathering of evaluations and their analysis, including evaluation of individual CME activities, are necessary to assess the degree to which the overall program fulfills Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine's CME mission. Evaluation data should guide the planning of future activities, resulting in improved educational programming.

Follow Up Survey

The CME program has developed a follow up survey for select activities to help evaluate the effectiveness of its CME activities in meeting educational needs. The survey is created no earlier than three months after the live event.  The survey asks the user to identify the following:

  1. If the activity clarified or reinforced principles and concepts underlying current handling of patients.
  2. How did this activity change the attendee's current practice.
  3. What was the impact on the attendee's patient care.

A link to the follow up survey is sent electronically to attendees.  The survey is open for at least three months.

Please view the following ACCME video on methods of activity evaluation.
