Clinical Medicine Doctoring Professionalism Policy

Professionalism encompasses many attributes. Clinical Medicine Doctoring will specifically review the following attributes:

  • Respect
  • Honesty
  • Responsibility
  • Punctuality
  • Clear and respectful communication
  • Maturity

For full definitions of each component listed above, please see the full policy at https://medicine.wright.edu/student-life/policies/professionalism.

In brief, students will be expected to model mutual respect between themselves, faculty and staff, using a respectful tone in all communications. Similarly, they will be expected to be honest in all actions. Tardiness, lack of preparation, avoiding work and missing deadlines are considered a breach in professionalism. Students should have a desire to improve one’s self, and accept and incorporate appropriate feedback. Intellectual curiosity, enthusiasm for life-long learning, and desire to master necessary skills and knowledge are qualities important for a physician.

If a student exemplifies the aforementioned characteristics, an accolade would be submitted to the concerns and accolades portal.  This student will have the potential to be awarded an honors designation in Clinical Medicine Doctoring (CMD), with the potential for an Excellence Across Clerkships in the Doctoring Year.  It will also be noted in the Medical Student Performance Evaluation (MSPE).  The full criteria for Excellence Across Clerkships in the Doctoring Year can be found here.

If there has been a breach in professionalism during the CMD course, the following procedure will be followed:

  1. The CMD module director will meet with the student with the course coordinator present.  Notes from the meeting will be sent to the student.  The student will then need to confirm receipt of the notes and agreement with the content therein within 48 business hours.
  2. If the student continues to display unprofessional behavior, then the CMD module director and Vice Chair of Doctoring will have a subsequent meeting.  The Associate Dean of the Office of Student Affairs and Admissions (OSAA) will be in attendance at this meeting. A concern will be placed into the concerns and accolades portal to document the meeting and content therein.
  3. If the unprofessional behavior(s) continues, the student will have a subsequent meeting with the Associate Dean of OSAA.  The student will have a mention of the unprofessional behavior within the MSPE.  If further unprofessional behavior occurs, it could result in the dismissal of the student from the Boonshoft School of Medicine (BSOM).

Depending on the nature of the breach in professional behavior, the CMD module director may forego the three-step process with a resulting note in the MSPE and potential for dismissal from BSOM.  This decision would be made by the CMD module director in conjunction with the Vice Chair of Doctoring and the Associate Dean of OSAA.  Dismissal would be decided in conjunction with the Student Promotions Committee. Similarly, the student may be required to go in front of the Medical Student Honor Code Council.
