361.1 Purpose

This policy codifies the process for advancement in and graduation from the Boonshoft School of Medicine (BSOM) MD program. In accordance with Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) Element 9.9:

"A medical school ensures that the medical education program has a single set of core standards for the advancement and graduation of all medical students across all locations."

and LCME Element 10.3:

“The faculty of a medical school establish criteria for student selection and develop and implement effective policies and procedures regarding, and make decisions about, medical student application, selection, admission, assessment, promotion, graduation, and any disciplinary action. The medical school makes available to all interested parties its criteria, standards, policies, and procedures regarding these matters.”

361.2 Policy for Promotion and Graduation Eligibility

Students must receive a passing grade in all required modules, clerkships, electives, and requirements to be eligible for promotion to the subsequent phase and/or year/portion and to be eligible for graduation.

Eligibility for Promotion to Foundations Phase, Year 2

Successful completion of:

  • Clinical Medicine Foundations I
  • Origins
  • Human Architecture I
  • Host & Defense
  • Staying Alive
  • Scholarship in Medicine
  • Introduction to Biostatistics I

Eligibility for Promotion to Doctoring Phase, Doctoring portion

Successful completion of:

  • Clinical Medicine Foundations II
  • Human Architecture II
  • Beginning to End
  • Balance, Control & Repair
  • IPE Foundations
  • Service Learning
  • USMLE Step 1

Eligibility for Promotion to Doctoring Phase, Advanced Doctoring portion

Successful completion of:

  • Family Medicine Clerkship
  • Internal Medicine Clerkship
  • Neurology Clerkship
  • Obstetrics & Gynecology Clerkship
  • Pediatrics Clerkship
  • Psychiatry Clerkship
  • Surgery Clerkship
  • Clinical Medicine Doctoring
  • IPE Doctoring requirement
  • 4 weeks Internal Medicine electives
  • 6 weeks of other electives

Eligibility for Graduation

Students must additionally successfully complete the Advanced Doctoring portion requirements:

  • Advanced Doctoring Bootcamp
  • Emergency Medicine Clerkship
  • Geriatrics and Palliative Care Clerkship (class of 2025 only)
  • 4 weeks of a Sub-Internship as outlined in the Requirements for MD Program policy
  • 30 weeks of electives as outlined in the Requirements for MD Program policy
  • BSOM Medical Education Program Objectives
  • USMLE Step 2 CK

361.2.1 Promotion and Graduation Eligibility for MD in 3 Track

Promotion to Foundations Phase, Year 2 and Doctoring Phase, Doctoring portion follows the regular MD requirements.

Eligibility for Promotion to Doctoring Phase, Advanced Doctoring portion

Successful completion of:

  • Family Medicine Clerkship
  • Internal Medicine Clerkship
  • Neurology Clerkship
  • Obstetrics & Gynecology Clerkship
  • Pediatrics Clerkship
  • Psychiatry Clerkship
  • Surgery Clerkship
  • Clinical Medicine Doctoring
  • IPE Doctoring requirement
  • 4 weeks Internal Medicine electives

Eligibility for Graduation

Students must additionally successfully complete the Advanced Doctoring portion requirements:

  • Advanced Doctoring Bootcamp

361.3 Participation in Activities, Electives, Certificate, or Dual-Degree Programs

Students must be in Good Academic Standing to participate in summer BSOM-approved activities, electives, certificate or dual-degree programs. Students who wish to enroll in a dual degree or certificate program must follow the Enrollment in Programs Outside of the Boonshoft School of Medicine MD program policy (policy 340).

361.4 Time in Phase and Program

Students must complete all required Foundations Phase requirements within three (3) academic calendar years. Students who are unable to meet this requirement will be referred to SPC.

Students must complete all required Doctoring Phase requirements within three (3) academic calendar years. Students who are unable to meet this requirement will be referred to SPC.

All non-dual degree medical student curricular/graduation requirements must be completed within six (6) years of the student’s date of matriculation.

  • This timeframe includes any personal, academic or medical leaves of absence.
  • Failure to successfully complete all curricular/graduation requirements without prior SPC approval within six years after matriculation will result in a referral to the Dean of BSOM.

361.5 MD Graduation Policy

The Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree is conferred on students who successfully complete all requirements. To participate in commencement, students need not have completed all requirements but must be scheduled to complete all Advanced Doctoring Year requirements by June 30th (see Requirements for MD Program policy).
